Process: Watercolor WIP-4

Here is the next in my watercolor experiment. I was worried about getting his hair dark enough but I think it turned out ok. I am not sure if you can see it, but I used the modulation of warm (the dark brown) and cool (ultramarine blue) to give more structure to his hair without messing with the values too much. I think it worked out. For the skin I used burnt sienna, yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, and my blues and browns. I did the dark shadow areas first and the. Washed with a lighter value. Then I added and blended mid tones and added his chin beard stubble color.

After this mess dried, I used a really thin brush to get the thin, tiny details. His eye, lips, nose, fingers and ears.

I also reshaped his nose and made it a tiny bit smaller around the eye. It was a slight bit too big.

(I can't believe I screwed up my drawing! Of all the things I was worried about... Just goes to show I should think about what I'm doing and not try to jump ahead!)
